In our opinion, it is indisputable that grilling is one of the best parts of summer! Whether you prefer burgers, steaks or fresh vegetables, grilling is a great way to get outside, keep your kitchen from getting warm and enjoy a fresh-cooked meal with a taste that can’t be beat.

While Atlantans are big fans of grilling, we are even bigger fans of grilling safely. Grill fires are far more common than you might think. Grills are the cause of more than 10,000 fires every year according to the National Fire Protection Agency, causing over $149 million in property damages.

Fortunately, grill fires are something that can typically be prevented with good maintenance and smart cooking habits. Be sure to stay safe as you grill out this summer!

| What Is a Grill Flare-up? |

  • A flare-up on the grill is often confused with a grease fire, but they are not the same thing. A flare-up on the grill is the result of fat from food dripping down into the heating element of the grill.
  • While they are normal, if your grill is too close to a deck, structure or home, they can quickly spread and cause serious damage.

| How Can I Prevent a Grill Flare-up? |

  • Clean Your Grill After Every Use - One of the most important things you can do to prevent flare-ups on your grill is getting into the habit of cleaning it regularly. The buildup of fat deposits on the grill can quickly lead to flare-ups if they are not addressed.
  • Trim Excess Fat - If you are cooking fatty meats such as steak, trim off as much fat as possible to avoid the likelihood of a flare-up occurring. If you are using a marinade, minimize the amount of oil you use to reduce the flammable material that is coming into contact with the grill.
  • Use a Two-Zone Cooking Method - A two-zone grilling method refers to adding coals on one side of the grill, while leaving the other side empty so it remains cool. That way, if a flare-up occurs, you can quickly move the food to the cooler area of the grill while the flare-up dies out.
