Do you know the most common source of home fires? Do you have measures in place to help prevent or lessen the severity of a house fire, should it happen to you? Let's take a look at the most common reasons house fires occur.

  • Kitchen Fires - Most kitchen fires start on the stove top. In fact, kitchen fires are the number one source for home fires according to the U.S. Fire Commision (USFA).
  • Heating Equipment - Space Heaters, generators, and fireplaces are involved in 1 out of 6 house fires.
  • Appliances - Dryers are the cause of 9 out of 10 appliance fires.
  • Electronics & Outlets- overloaded and overheated power cords can quickly ignite a fire
  • Overcluttered, Overpacked areas can cause the worst of fires.

While we can’t always prevent fires from starting, we can be prepared to put fires out and have plans in place to insure you and your family’s safety. Now that we know the most common reasons a house fire can start in a home, let's take a look at how we can prevent these types of fires.

  • Keep textiles away from stovetops and always remember never throw water on a grease fire. To extinguish grease fires, you must suffocate by depriving them of oxygen.
  • Make sure heat sources are kept away from flammable materials. Remember to unplug space heaters and never leave burning candles unattended. Fireplaces should be inspected and maintained once a year to prevent chimney fires.
  • Appliances should be maintained and kept in good working order. Lint screens should be cleaned after each cycle and vents should be cleaned and maintained periodically.
  • It is a best safety practice for each electronic device and appliance to have their own outlet. If this is not possible, be sure your outlets are not being overloaded. The most obvious way to know if your outlets are overloaded is a breaker tripping and power going off. If you notice your lights dimming or cords giving off heat, this is also a clue that something isn't quite right.
  • All homes should be equipped with working fire alarms and extinguishers. Both fire alarms and fire extinguishers need to be checked for proper functionality, maintained, and replaced periodically.
  • A fire escape plan should be established and practiced with everyone living in the home. Escape routes should outline at least two ways to exit each room. For example, two escape routes for a bedroom might be the bedroom door and bedroom window. Escape routes must be kept tidy so it is easy to exit the room in case of an emergency.
