Spring is a favorite time of year for many—maybe it’s because the weather is warming up and the outdoors begins to call. Maybe it’s a reminder that the cold of winter doesn’t last forever. Maybe it’s simply that you can use it as an impetus to restart some of those lapsed goals you set on January 1.

Regardless of the reason, something about the season just feels right.

There are also lots of social events around this time—family and high school reunions, outdoor parties, and really just any old excuse to cook food outdoors. This also means there’s a rise in fires and accidental combustion around the country.

In fact, spring sees more daily fires on average than any other time of year. But there are some easy cleanups and maintenance things you can do right now to prevent home fires this season.

Let’s look at the most common places to start:

The Grill

Grills receive the most blame for springtime fires, but truly it’s because they’re the most likely culprit. Grills create easy opportunities for fires to start—the close proximity of flame, heat, gas and grease combine for a potentially combustible situation. Evaluate your grill’s stability and ensure it’s in working order, checking all connections and openings. Make sure it’s at a safe distance from anything flammable (including the house), and clean it thoroughly between uses. Almost 20% of grill fires are due to poor cleaning.

The Fire Pit

Spring and summer is a great time to hang out in the backyard with friends, but keep safety first. Before you start your pit fire, fill a bucket with water and keep it beside the pit. It’s an emergency douser, and when the time comes to quell the fire, you can use it to slowly pour over the fire until the embers aren’t glowing. Keep kids away from the fire, for their safety and to prevent accidents. Don’t add leaves or pine needles to the fire, as they can create flying embers.

Chimneys & Dryer Vents

It’s recommended that you have your chimney cleaned out annually, so do that now to avoid caking and clogging. Also check the connections and hose of your dryer to make sure no flammable lint is collecting in the vent pipe.
